Singer, harpist, and choir conductor Sophye Soliveau blends her classical training with a deep love for African American music – ranging from R&B and soul to hip-hop, jazz, and gospel. On her debut album ‘INITIATION’, the French artist with roots in Guadeloupe embarks on a journey to uncover the origins of her musical inspiration: the rhythm and blues of Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith. These iconic blues singers from the 1920s to 1940s openly advocated for equal rights, female sexual freedom, and emancipation. To reinforce her message, Soliveau plays to her greatest strengths. First, her velvety soul voice, capable of sending warmth through even the coldest veins. Then, she transforms the harp from a classical, sometimes dusty instrument into a source of featherlight, exhilarating sounds. She is backed by a subtle rhythm section that gently nudges the hips into motion. At the Eurosonic showcase festival, Soliveau left an entire audience in awe with her dynamic set. Anyone looking to ease into their Saturday morning, cradled by an exceptional talent we’ll be hearing much more from, would do well to arrive on time! |
