| In their home country of the Netherlands, there is no longer any doubt: Amsterdam-based indie pop band Hiqpy is the next big thing. Without having released a single note of music, they have already made it onto the stages of festivals such as Pinkpop, Best Kept Secret, and Into The Great Wide Open. Last year, they were a last-minute replacement at Werchter, a performance that prompted Belgian magazine Humo to sing their praises afterwards: “the primal force of Anna Calvi, a fondness for the cinematic character of Weyes Blood, and Sonic Youth-worthy outbursts.” Meanwhile, Hiqpy have secured a record deal with Sony Music and are ready for a major breakthrough. Tunisian-Dutch songwriter Abir Hamam proves adept at writing songs that truly mean something while also seeming tailor-made to explode on the biggest festival stages. For their first singles ‘Something’, ‘Girl in Red’, and ‘Red Flag Magician’, Hiqpy collaborated with Danton Supple, Grammy-winning producer for artists such as Coldplay, U2, and Elbow. False modesty won’t get you far with our northern neighbors, so we might as well say it like it is: Hiqpy are aiming for the big stages and the big anthems. And if they deliver them as crisply and thrillingly as these Amsterdammers do, then we are more than ready. |
