Minyo Crusaders is a band with a mission. The Japanese ensemble is dedicated to keeping traditional min’yō alive. These folk songs hold a nostalgic value in the Land of the Rising Sun but also carry a somewhat dusty and elitist image. Yet, min’yō originally belonged to the people, sung by fishermen, miners, and sumo wrestlers. Enter Minyo Crusaders, who fuse the Eastern tradition of min’yō with a vibrant Southern mix of cumbia, Ethiopian jazz, and Afro-funk. A move as bizarre as it is brilliant, as the upbeat rhythms of these genres fit their Japanese chants perfectly. Songs about the return of ancestral spirits, Japan’s smallest bird, and a bride’s love for the pockmarked face of her future husband are given an irresistibly danceable twist. Minyo Crusaders is one of the most remarkable and successful fusion acts around today. Gilles Peterson is a devoted fan, as is Buena Vista Social Club mastermind Ry Cooder, and in recent years, the band has played festivals such as WOMAD, Le Guess Who, Trans Musicales, and Best Kept Secret. With their high-energy set and infectious vibes, they bring min’yō to all corners of the world. The most unexpected party at Cactusfestival 2025? You’ll find it with Minyo Crusaders. |
